What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy focuses on the whole body to promote healing, improve mobility, circulation, and overall well-being.

Using a combination of traditional and modern healthcare philosophies, osteopaths generally use non-invasive forms of therapy like muscle soft-tissue work, joint mobilisation or manipulation, stretching and exercises, combined with education and advice to support the body’s natural healing processes.

As university-trained and government-registered healthcare professionals, osteopaths take the time to understand your health history, lifestyle and body. They develop a tailored plan that includes hands-on treatment, advice and strategies to support your recovery, help manage pain effectively, and improve your overall well-being for the long term.

Osteopathy focuses on the whole body to promote healing, improve the body’s mobility, circulation and well-being.

Osteopaths believe that the body has the ability to recover when it's in the right balance and position.

Using a combination of traditional and modern healthcare philosophies, osteopaths generally use non-invasive forms of therapy like muscle soft-tissue work, joint mobilisation or manipulation, stretching and exercises, combined with education and advice to support the body’s natural healing processes.

A whole-body philosophy means osteopaths find the root of your pain and discomfort, educate you on your diagnosis and work on finding a solution that works for you.

Osteopathy is your path to a healthier you.

What to Expect on your first Osteopathy Visit.

If it’s your first time seeing an osteopath, you may be wondering what to expect.

At Twin Rivers Osteopathy, we take the time to understand you, your body and what’s bringing you into the clinic.

Our approach is personalised, professional and focused on helping you move and feel your best.

1. A Relaxed Conversation
Your first appointment begins with a detailed conversation about your current concerns, symptoms and goals.
We’ll ask about:
•    What you’re experiencing and when it started
•    What makes your symptoms better or worse
•    Your lifestyle, work, exercise and daily activities
•    Previous injuries, treatments and relevant medical history
•    What you would like to achieve from treatment
This helps us build a complete picture of your health and understand what may be contributing to your symptoms, rather than simply focusing on where you feel pain.

2. A Thorough Assessment
Your Osteopath will then perform an individualised physical assessment. This may include looking at your posture, movement, joint mobility, muscle function and how different areas of your body are working together.
Depending on your presentation, we may also use specific orthopaedic or neurological tests to help determine the most appropriate approach.
If further investigation, imaging or medical assessment is recommended, we’ll discuss this with you.

3. Your Personalised Treatment
Once your assessment is complete, your Osteopath will explain their findings and discuss your treatment options with you.
Treatment may include a combination of:
•    Gentle joint mobilisation
•    Soft tissue and massage techniques
•    Stretching and movement-based techniques
•    Dry needling
•    Spinal or joint manipulation, where appropriate
•    Rehabilitation and strengthening exercises

Every treatment is tailored to your individual needs, goals and comfort level.

4. Feeling Comfortable During Your Assessment & Treatment
To allow your Osteopath to properly assess your posture, alignment and movement, we ask that you dress down to your underwear for your initial assessment.

We understand that this can feel a little uncomfortable or overwhelming, particularly if it’s your first osteopathy appointment.

Your privacy, dignity and comfort are always important to us, and we maintain a professional and respectful environment throughout your appointment.

For your comfort, we recommend:
•    Wearing comfortable, suitable underwear that you feel confident being assessed in
•    Bringing a pair of loose-fitting shorts if you would prefer additional coverage
•    For women, wearing a bra that can be easily unclipped or adjusted, as this can assist with assessing the upper back, shoulders and posture.

During treatment, you will be appropriately covered with towels and blankets, with only the area being treated exposed.

If you have any concerns about what to wear or feel uncomfortable at any stage, please let your Osteopath know. We are always happy to work with you to ensure you feel safe, respected and at ease.

5. Your Personalised Recovery Plan
Your appointment is about more than simply treating your symptoms on the day.

Where appropriate, your Osteopath may recommend exercises, movement strategies or rehabilitation to support your recovery between appointments.
We may also recommend combining your hands-on osteopathy treatment with our Clinical Rehabilitation Reformer Pilates program to help develop strength, stability, mobility and confidence in movement.

Your Osteopath will work with you to create a comprehensive recovery plan that is appropriate for your individual needs and goals.

6. Your Follow-Up
Following your initial consultation and treatment, we generally recommend scheduling a follow-up appointment approximately one week later.

This allows us to see how your body has responded to the initial treatment, reassess your progress and make any necessary adjustments to your recovery plan.

Your treatment frequency will then depend on your individual presentation, progress and goals.

7. Ongoing Wellness & Maintenance
Once your symptoms have improved, some patients choose to continue with an ongoing maintenance plan as part of a proactive approach to their health and wellbeing.

Depending on your individual needs, maintenance appointments may be scheduled every 6, 8 or 10 weeks.

Regular osteopathy care can be part of a healthy lifestyle, helping you maintain movement, mobility and physical wellbeing so you can continue doing the things you love.

You Don’t Need to Know What’s Wrong Before You Come In

Whether you’re experiencing an ongoing issue, recovering from an injury, feeling restricted in your movement or simply want to take better care of your body, we’re here to help.

We’ll take the time to listen, assess, explain and create a treatment approach that is right for you.
